The book to read
“Red sky in the morning. It was going to rain. Yes.”

You know how non-reader people often ask you “What is your favourite book?” and you are having hard time not rolling your eyes, because it is practically impossible to compare books with each other and choose just one, on top of that? Well, after reading Good Omens, I have my answer.

This is my all-time favourite book.

Why, you ask? Good question...

I have spent the past three days walking the streets of Bogota in a daze, smiling and trying to put my finger on what makes it so special. And whenever I tried to explain myself to anyone even remotely interested in listening, I turned into a babbling mechanism, too excited to get a coherent sentence out of myself. But I think I finally got it.

It’s because, pure and simple, this book is a Masterpiece. And with a capital M, no less.

Imagine a sort of a Master and Margarita reborn into the age of fantasy, answering machines and exploding nuclear reactors. It is a rollercoaster-dash-haunted-forest that makes you giddy with excitement, breathlessly expecting what’s going to jump out at you at the nearest turn.

It is filled with the quirkiest characters whose way of thinking makes your head spin, while marveling how entirely relatable they are (“Adam had a way of slouching along that offended all right-thinking people.”).

And then, imagine those characters driving old flaming Bentleys (literally), or riding motorcycles to the end of the world (literally again), having dialogues that make you pause mid-way into the adventure just to appreciate the sheer beauty of the authors’ intelligent humour:

“I mean, you’re supposed to thwart the wiles of the Evil One at every turn, aren’t you?’
Aziraphale hesitated. ‘There is that, yes.’
‘You see a wile, you thwart. Am I right?’”

“There was a sound outside like a sheet of corrugated iron pinwheeling across the garden, which was exactly what it was.”

“It looked as if it had smoked glass windows, although this was just an effect caused by it having ordinary glass windows but a smoke-filled interior.”

Somehow the words in the hands of Pratchett and Gaiman become so much more than what they are at the first glance, and get infused with a life of their own, becoming a whole new source of mindboggling beauty (“Pollution removed his helmet and shook out his long white hair. He’d taken over when Pestilence, muttering about penicillin, had retired in 1936.”)

Good Omens feels as though you are drinking one of those soul-warming chai lattes, mixed with firecrackers that explode at the tip of your tongue - it leaves you comforted, softened on the inside, while marveling at the unexpected jolts of exhilaration the whole experience brought along with it.

‘Maybe some terrorist—?’ Aziraphale began.
‘Not one of ours,’ said Crowley.
‘Or ours,’ said Aziraphale. ‘Although ours are freedom fighters, of course.’

I was never a fan of fantasy, and the storyline is something that would, even as little as two months ago, have made my eyebrows raise to unseen heights, shaking my head with bafflement at the kind of people reading this sort of thing.

But that was before my reading world was set alight by the writing genius of both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, their wondrous grasp of English language and their unbeatable flair for the extraordinary.

And now?

Well, after two sleepless nights squinting at my Kindle and one lazy day spent binging on the TV series, I also treated myself to the Audible version and am impatiently waiting for the paperback to arrive.
