Leviathan

One of the greatest works in the history of ideas, this treatise calls for a powerful sovereign, a "Leviathan," to enforce peace and justice. Thomas Hobbes wrote his masterpiece during the English Civil War and published it amid enormous controversy in 1651. His polemic on the importance of a strong, undivided government continues to rank among the most influential works of social contract theory.
