Anglická spisovatelka Barbara Cartland (nar. 1901) se ocitla na výsluní již tím, že se vůbec narodila. Uměla si totiž vybrat: od kolébky je příslušnicí proslulé aristokratické rodiny, jedné z nejstarších a nejváženějších ve Velké Británii. Půvabné, talentované dívce to ovšem nestačilo a nespokojila se ani s tím, že na sebe upoutala pozornost okamžitě po vstupu do společnosti. Barbara Cartland se rozhodla, že se stane proslulou a slavnou na poli, na němž její věhlasní předkové slávu nedobývali - a to na poli literárním.
Překvapivý a odvážný záměr se jí podařilo uskutečnit dokonale. Její napínavé milostné příběhy si postupně získaly srdce čtenářů nejen na britských ostrovech, ale doslova po celém světě. Pod jejím perem totiž vznikaly úžasné příběhy plné lásky, odehrávající ve starobylých romantických sídlech anglické šlechty. Barbara Cartland se dostala dokonce na stránky Guinnessovy knihy rekordů, a to jako spisovatelka nejprodávanější - čili nejčtenější, ale i nejpilnější. Jejích knih se prodalo k dnešnímu dni přes 600 milionů výtisků.
Se vzrůstajícím autorčiným věhlasem na sebe nenechala čekat ani filmová zpracování jejích nejoblíbenějších románů, která dosáhla nemenší popularity. Čtyři z těchto filmových zpracování už úspěšně odvysílala televize Prima. Je obdivuhodné, že si při veškerém pracovním vytížení ještě dokázala najít čas na charitativní činnost. V roce 1991 jí královna Alžběta II. propůjčila titul The Dame of the Order of the British Empire.
Barbara Cartland se v mnohém podobá svým hrdinkám - je to dokonalá dáma oslňující společnost a pohybující se v nejvyšších aristokratických kruzích, věrná manželka i milující matka.
