John Ronald Reuel Tolkien byl anglický spisovatel, autor knihy Hobit a jejího pokračování Pán prstenů.
Byl to významný jazykovědec, znalec anglosaštiny (staré angličtiny) a staré severštiny. Na Oxfordské univerzitě působil v letech 1925-1945 jako profesor anglosaštiny, v letech 1945-1959 potom jako profesor anglického jazyka a literatury. Společně se svým nejbližším přítelem C. S. Lewisem se scházel v literárním diskuzním klubu Inklings (doslova "Atramentovci").
Tolkienovo dílo zahrnuje i množství knih z pozůstalosti o historii fiktivního světa tředozem, ve které se Hobit a Pán prstenů odehrávají. Pro neutichající popularitu a vliv jeho děl je Tolkien považovaný za otce moderní high fantasy.
Další Tolkienova publikovaná fantasy díla jsou pohádky a příběhy, které původně vyprávěl svým dětem a netýkají se Středozemě.
