Více o knize

From the ‘10,000 hours rule’ to the power of Tiger parenting, we have been taught that success in any field requires early specialization and many hours of deliberate practice. And, worse, that if you dabble or delay, you'll never catch up with those who got a head start. This is completely wrong. In this landmark book, David Epstein shows you that the way to succeed is by sampling widely, gaining a breadth of experiences, taking detours, experimenting relentlessly, juggling many interests - in other words, by developing range.

Studying the world's most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors and scientists, Epstein demonstrates why in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists are primed to excel. No matter what you do, where you are in life, whether you are a teacher, student, scientist, business analyst, parent, job hunter, retiree, you will see the world differently after you've read Range. You'll understand better how we solve problems, how we learn and how we succeed. You'll see why failing a test is the best way to learn and why frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers.

As experts silo themselves further while computers master more of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, Range shows how people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive and why spreading your knowledge across multiple domains is the key to your success, and how to achieve it.

Engaging
The author debunks the myth of early hyperspecalisation as a guarantee of success and rather suggests a 'range' of specialties and/or domains. He provides an array of true stories of world-known athletes, artists, inventors and scientists who have succeded in their respective fields due to a breadth of experience, free play and tapping into multiple interests, oftentimes switching careers. I found most of the book engaging, however there were sections which seemed unnecessarily long to prove a point. When asked about a single-sentence piece of advice, the author recommends a seemingly disorderly path of experimentation, sampling, detours and interdisciplinary exploration. If you think that it is too late for you to take up a new hobby or start a new career, you are wrong. None of it will ever be a waste in the long run. Číst víc

This is once again the weird genre that I can never quite classify. It’s pretending to be a business book, but really isn’t. It’s a weird mix of self-help (not quite though), psychology (not technical though) and A LOT of anecdotes from all kinds of fields. And all of this is aimed at business professionals (I suppose?) for their professional and personal growth.

And as with many of these books, it could’ve been a longer article or an essay. Although the concepts mentioned in the book were interesting, using so much anecdotal evidence and fluff brought the overall enjoyment of the book down for me.

Each chapter talks about a slightly different topic, all loosely centered around the notion of how being a generalist can be beneficial in today’s specialized world. Some of the topics (and thus chapters) were more insightful, some less, but in general I did learn quite a few interesting things. However, the long anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter (that were then used as an example through the whole chapter) were incredibly unnecessary and boring. This book would have benefited from being way more concise and focusing more on the actual theories and psychology behind them than listing random stories where “this one person did this and therefore…” Anecdotal evidence is fine from time to time, but basing a whole book on it wasn’t the smartest choice in my opinion.

The author also often referenced Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, which I have also read so I didn’t find those parts particularly enriching. Plus Thinking Fast and Slow is one of my favourite books and I believe Kahneman did a way better job at explaining the same concepts (in greater detail and in a more interesting way).

Overall, not a bad book, but I was expecting more given the attention it received in business and financial media when it came out.

ZÁKULISIE ÚSPEŠNÉHO NAPREDOVNIA
Pojem “expert-generalist” vytvorila Orit Gadiesh a opisuje ju nasledovne: “Niekto, kto má nadanie a zvedavosť na ovládnutie a zhromaždenie odbornej znalosti v mnohých rôznych disciplínách, odvetviach, zručnostiach, schopnostiach a témach.
